What’s in your shirtpockets?

17 01 2007

Second night went a bit better, althought I can say it was cold, but hot still also. The climate on the river at night is very strange. You are hot from the afternoon heat, you haven’t showered in the river water so you have a sticky layer of funk covering your body so you just want it to cool off and get breezy. But it is breezy. The problem (I think) is that the breeze carries with it 100% humidity so it makes everything damp, and since it is breezy and damp, your skin feels cold. But remember, you’re also hot! It is very confusing.

I should also mention that I am amazed at the amount of crap that I am carrying around with me. I woke up this morning in the hammock with our water bottle aside me (I slept in the good hammock last night), and the following things in the pockets of my shirt:

  1. 2 pairs of sunglasses
  2. TP (the chicken soup last night didn’t agree with me)
  3. 140 Soles
  4. Our boat ticket (also serves as our meal ticket - very important, although being the only gringos on the boat, I doubt they really need to see it)
  5. Copies of our passports
  6. A printout of our flight itinerary confirmation (which will hopefully serve as sufficient proof of onward travel at the Brazilian border in a few days)
  7. The uberpen
  8. A knife and fork

That was just my shirt (Thanks Mom!) In the pockets of my pants:

  1. My wallet (containing credit cards and $139 USD)
  2. Lip balm
  3. Hand sanitizer
  4. My inhaler (my asthma really bothered me in Tingo Maria, but after that, none at all - probably because all the mototaxis there were 2 stroke and the topography keeps any releiving winds to a minimum)
  5. My passport and
  6. 80 Soles in bills
  7. 3 more Soles in change
  8. My whistle keychain
  9. Knife
  10. All the trash we’ve generated so far this boat trip (I refuse to throw it in the river like the locals - strange since they eat the fish they catch from the same waters)

Hi Neenan and Meghan!
It was so good to talk to you last night! And when I got on today, there were so many new entries to catch up on! What an adventure you are having….I am alternately laughing, worrying, feeling relieved, laughing again. I’m so glad the shirt came in handy…..with all the pockets and compartments. I’m not sure if you are taking photos (camera in one of the pockets?)…..I’m trying to picture everything anyway, at least some of the things….ha ha.
Love, Mom
